If you're trying to beat the heat and quench your thirst on a hot summer day, you might be in luck.
National Smoothie Day is on June 21 which celebrates the blended dessert that comes in a variety of flavors. Smoothies are often made with an ice cream, milk, yogurt or fruit juice base. The treat can be enjoyed with fruits or vegetables and is often used as an alternative to get in those nutrients that we need.
It isn't known when the first smoothie was created, but it is believed that Eastern and Mediterranean cultures created fruit drinks similar to smoothies for hundreds of years, the Juice Shop said. In 1932 Stephen J. Poplawski received patents for a machine that would liquify fruits and vegetables, the Illinois State Museum said.
As the use of refrigerators and blenders gained popularity, fruit drinks became a requested refreshment item. In the 1960s, smoothies were at the forefront of the macrobiotic diet which caused many Americans to think about how and what they ate, the Juice Shop said.
Whether you drink a smoothie as a healthy alternative or a have one as a thirst quencher, you’ll want to check your favorite smoothie shop for their National Smoothie Day deals and freebies.
